President of El Salvador Bukele mocks Democratic Senator over Bitcoin investigation

President of El Salvador #NayibBukele publicly mocked U.S. Democratic Senators on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the bill investigating the use of cryptocurrency in his country.

Response to the investigation bill

Bukele, known for his crypto-friendly policies and defiant attitude towards foreign leaders, wrote: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA the Dems are just salty" when responding to the "El Salvador Accountability Act of 2025." This bill proposes to investigate how the El Salvadoran government uses cryptocurrency as a tool for "regime corruption" and calls for the freezing of the country's assets.

Democratic Senators expressed concerns that Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies could be used in #ElSalvador to evade financial sanctions imposed on other countries.

Bitcoin policy and Bukele's support

El Salvador made Bitcoin legal tender alongside the USD in 2021. Although he later agreed to ease regulations requiring the mandatory acceptance of Bitcoin, Bukele remains steadfast in purchasing cryptocurrency for the national treasury. According to data from Arkham Intelligence, the address $BTC of the El Salvadoran government currently holds 6,232 BTC, valued at 690 million USD.

Despite criticism over establishing an authoritarian government, Bukele continues to maintain widespread support domestically.
