During a meeting with African leaders, Donald Trump congratulated the president of Liberia for his "excellent English" and asked him where he learned it.
🇱🇷 Small detail:
Liberia was founded in 1821 by an American society to relocate freed black slaves. Since then, English has been its official language. That is to say, it’s not that they learn it: they are born speaking it.
📚 A bit of history that was missing in the room:
Liberia is one of the few African countries whose official language is English by direct heritage from the U.S.
Its capital, Monrovia, was named in honor of the American president James Monroe.
The historical relationship between both countries is deep… but little known, even by former presidents.
