Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, announced the beta version of the decentralized messenger Bitchat, which operates over Bluetooth without an internet connection. The project, presented on July 7, 2025, uses a mesh network where each device acts as both a client and a server. This allows messages to be transmitted even in offline mode, which is ideal for protests, disasters, or censorship situations.
Bitchat provides end-to-end encryption, does not require accounts, phone numbers, or email addresses for registration. Messages are transmitted via Bluetooth Low Energy within a 30-meter radius, and the store-and-forward feature saves them for offline users. Dorsey noted that the project is inspired by IRC chats from the 1990s and called it a 'weekend hackathon' to explore Bluetooth networks.
The messenger has potential for use in conditions with limited internet access, providing privacy and resilience to censorship. Bitchat is already available for beta testing on iOS via TestFlight, and the code has been published on GitHub. Stay tuned for updates in the world of cryptocurrencies and technology!
