Tensions between Donald Trump and Elon Musk have escalated sharply in recent days. In a recent post on Truth Social, the U.S. President suggested that his administration might "reconsider" its support for Musk's companies and hinted that the DOGE agency — which Trump once co-founded with Musk — should take a closer look at the billionaire’s empire.
🚨 Trump: Musk Would Be Nothing Without Subsidies
In a striking statement, Trump questioned Musk’s past leadership of the DOGE office and accused him of relying heavily on government aid.
“Elon may receive more subsidies than any person in history. Without them, he’d probably have to pack up and go back to South Africa,” the President wrote.
🤝 DOGE: From Joint Project to Fallout
The DOGE agency, launched in early 2025, was originally created to streamline federal processes and was named after the popular meme cryptocurrency Dogecoin. It began as a collaborative project between Trump and Musk, aiming to disrupt traditional bureaucracy.
But that partnership is clearly fractured. Musk has recently distanced himself from the administration, criticizing its proposals and publicly opposing Trump’s ambitious One Big Beautiful Bill.
💥 Musk: The Bill Could Wreck the Economy
The legislation, which seeks sweeping tax cuts, immigration reform, and crypto-friendly policies, has been criticized by economists — and by Musk.
“Hitting the debt ceiling is the only thing that forces the government to stop waste,” Musk wrote on X, indirectly referencing Trump’s recent post.
⚡ Tesla, SpaceX, and Crypto in the Crossfire
Trump’s remarks come despite the fact that Musk’s companies — Tesla and SpaceX — are considered critical to U.S. national interests in defense and energy. Both firms are also deeply involved in the crypto ecosystem. Tesla currently holds about $1.2 billion in Bitcoin, and Musk’s X platform has started integrating crypto payments.
Trump himself has longstanding ties to the crypto world — from family NFT projects to partnerships with companies like mining firm Hut 8 and DeFi platform World Liberty Financial.
When asked last week whether he would cut these ties, Trump declined to answer directly and instead stated:
“Without my presidency, the crypto industry wouldn’t be where it is today. And if we didn’t have it, China would.”
