Long ago, in the ancient kingdoms of India, a great war raged between two rival kings. The conflict dragged on for years, draining the land of its wealth and its people of their lives. Desperate to end the bloodshed, a wise sage named Sissa approached the warring rulers with a gift—a game that would teach them the art of strategy without the cost of battle.

This game was Chaturanga, the ancestor of modern CHESS.

The Game of Kings

Chaturanga (meaning "four divisions" in Sanskrit) mirrored an Indian army:

🔹 Infantry (Pawns) – Slow but numerous, advancing step by step.

🔹 Cavalry (Knights) – Swift and unpredictable, leaping over obstacles.

🔹 Elephants(Bishops) – Powerful but limited in movement.

🔹 Chariots (Rooks) – Fast and deadly in straight lines.

🔹 King– The most important piece, whose fate decided the game.

The two kings sat down to play, and as they moved their pieces, they saw the consequences of reckless attacks and the value of patience. The game became a metaphor for war—where cunning, not just brute force, led to victory.

A Gift Beyond Measure

Impressed, one king offered Sissa any reward he desired. The sage, ever humble, made a simple request:

"Place one grain of rice on the first square of the board, two on the second, four on the third, and so on, doubling each time until all 64 squares are filled."

The king laughed, thinking it a modest prize—until his advisors calculated the final amount: 18 quintillion grains of rice, more than all the rice in the world.

Thus, chess not only taught strategy but also the power of exponential growth—and the danger of underestimating the wise.

From India to the World

Over centuries, Chaturanga spread:

🔹 To Persia as Shatranj, where terms like "Shah Mat!" (the king is defeated) became "Checkmate."

🔹 To Arabia, where scholars wrote the first books on chess strategy.

🔹 To Europe, where the pieces evolved into the modern queen, bishops, and pawns we know today.

And so, the game born from war became a timeless battle of minds—a dance of logic and creativity that endures to this day.
