BTC wasn't always this popular. In many countries, it was banned at the beginning. Some examples:
In Morocco and Bangladesh, using it is illegal.
In China, they banned it... but they continue to mine more than anyone else.
In Colombia, there is still confusion with the laws.
The curious thing is that, although they tried to stop it, BTC keeps rising.
