20th Century – Precomputation
1917 – Vernam Cipher (One-Time Pad): The only theoretically unbreakable cipher is created.
WWII (1939–1945) – Enigma Machine (Germany) and Ultra (Allies) mark the peak of modern cryptography.
1949 – Claude Shannon publishes "The Mathematical Theory of Communication," the foundation of modern cryptography.
