Middle Ages – Renaissance
9th Century – Al-Kindi: Develops frequency analysis, breaking simple ciphers.
15th Century – Renaissance Codes: Cryptography becomes courtly and diplomatic art (Vigenère).
1586 – Blaise de Vigenère publishes his eponymous cipher (although it already existed in partial form).
