What is Swing Trading?

Swing trading is a trading strategy where traders try to capture short-to-medium term gains in a stock (or any financial asset) over a period of a few days to a few weeks. It’s based on “swings” in the market — upward or downward price movements.💸☠️💵

Basic Concept

Swing traders use both technical analysis (charts, patterns, indicators) and fundamental analysis (news, earnings, economic reports) to make decisions. The goal is to catch a “swing” — buy when the price is likely to go up, sell before it reverses.

Steps of a Basic Swing Trading Strategy

1. Find the Right Stocks/Assets

Focus on stocks that are volatile (move up and down regularly)

Look for trending stocks with momentum

2. Use Technical Indicators

Moving Averages (e.g., 20-day, 50-day): To find the direction of the trend

Relative Strength Index (RSI): To spot overbought (sell) or oversold (buy) conditions

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): For trend changes

Support & Resistance Levels: Buy near support, sell near resistance

3. Entry Strategy (When to Buy)

Buy when the price bounces from a support level

Buy when RSI is below 30 (oversold), and the trend is upward

Buy on bullish candlestick patterns (e.g., hammer, engulfing)

4. Exit Strategy (When to Sell)

Sell when price approaches resistance

Sell when RSI is above 70 (overbought)

Use trailing stop-loss to lock in profits

5. Risk Management

Never risk more than 1-2% of your total capital on a single trade

Use stop-loss orders to limit potential losses

Always set a target price for profits

Example of a Swing Trade

1. Stock XYZ is in an uptrend.

2. It pulls back to its 20-day moving average (support).

3. RSI is around 35 (slightly oversold in an uptrend).

4. You buy at $50. Target price is $55. Stop-loss at $48.

5. If it hits $55, you sell and take the profit. If it hits $48, you exit to limit loss.
