Reddit Considers Using Iris Verification Technology from the World Crypto Project
Reddit is reportedly considering the use of human verification technology from World, a crypto project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This technology uses iris scanning through a device called 'orb' to provide a unique identity to individuals without revealing personal identity. World ID allows Reddit users to prove that they are real humans while remaining anonymous, unlike platforms like Instagram or TikTok that emphasize personal identity.
This technology has previously been tested by Tinder in Japan to help verify users' age and authenticity. With the increasing use of AI and automated accounts on the internet, the need to prove that someone is a human being is becoming more relevant. Reddit, which focuses on content rather than identity, is seen as a strategic place to test this system. Meanwhile, some states in the US are beginning to consider regulations that require online age verification for users.
