Overnight, $90 million of Iranian cryptocurrency vanished into thin air, not stolen, but destroyed.
It sounds like science fiction, but it is happening in reality. Yesterday, a mysterious hacker group named 'Hunting Sparrows' announced that it had breached Iran's largest cryptocurrency trading platform, Nobitex, and 'evaporated' over $90 million in cryptocurrency assets from the platform.
These funds did not flow to the black market or anonymous wallets, but were transferred to some special addresses that cannot be accessed—equivalent to being permanently destroyed, even the hackers themselves cannot access them. Cryptocurrency analysis company Elliptic stated that it would take billions of years with current technology to crack the keys to these addresses. In other words: this money is completely gone.
