Bitcoin (BTC) is the pioneering and most well-known cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Unlike traditional currencies, Bitcoin is decentralized, meaning it is not controlled by any bank or government.

Transactions with BTC are recorded in a public ledger called the blockchain, which is maintained by a network of users. This process ensures security and transparency without the involvement of intermediaries. Miners compete to add new blocks to the blockchain, validating transactions and earning BTC in return. The limited supply of 21 million coins makes it a deflationary asset, often compared to "digital gold." Price volatility is a key characteristic, but global recognition and infrastructure development continue to strengthen its position as a significant financial asset.
