The 8th anniversary of the official Unicode symbol for Bitcoin ₿. Unicode version 10.0.0 was released on June 20, 2017, adding 8,518 characters including the Bitcoin symbol ₿. The symbol was proposed by hardware hacker Ken Shirriff in 2015, with support from the Bitcoin Foundation and several early Bitcoin community members. The design of the ₿ symbol was inspired by the icon of Satoshi Nakamoto's original Bitcoin client, representing a full Bitcoin. Although Unicode has recognized the Bitcoin symbol, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has not yet included Bitcoin in its list of currency codes. The Bitcoin Foundation attempted to apply for ISO approval but was unsuccessful. The official recognition of the symbol marks an important milestone for Bitcoin as a digital currency.
