Sberbank, the largest bank in Russia, is preparing to launch its own large language model (LLM), GigaChat, with advanced reasoning capabilities.
Deputy CEO Alexander Vedyakhin stated in an interview that the beta testing of the model is currently underway and will soon be officially launched.
Following Russia in the field of artificial intelligence with GigaChat
Most current LLMs primarily focus on chat purposes and basic tasks; however, Sberbank asserts that GigaChat possesses advanced reasoning capabilities, helping to solve complex issues in science, mathematics, and programming, comparable to models like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Vedyakhin acknowledged that the model is about 6 to 9 months slower than the AI superpowers of the United States and China. However, he emphasized that GigaChat has been optimized for the Russian language, domestic cloud performance, and local business needs.
Due to its focus on Russian language proficiency, GigaChat is expected to have higher value and be more favored domestically. Currently, approximately 15,000 Russian businesses have begun trialing and applying this model.
Sberbank expands international cooperation in the field of AI
Not stopping domestically, in February 2025, Vedyakhin announced plans for joint research cooperation on AI with China. 'The bank has many scientists. Through them, we will coordinate to implement joint research projects with Chinese scientists.'
This approach is based on Russia's 'unlimited' strategic relationship and the development of the low-cost LLM model, DeepSeek. The alliance also reflects Russia's ambitions to enhance sovereignty and promote relations with technologically advanced BRICS countries.
In addition, the Roscosmos space corporation is also planning to integrate the GigaChat model into the IT system of the International Space Station (ISS).
Roscosmos Chairman Dmitry Bakanov stated that the ISS mission flight planned for November 27 will provide all necessary equipment to integrate this model, directly assisting astronauts in processing satellite imagery and enhancing image resolution.
Sberbank builds a hybrid technology-financial center
In addition to artificial intelligence, Sberbank is also expanding into the cryptocurrency market. In early June, the bank launched structured bonds linked to Bitcoin prices and the USD/RUB exchange rate.
This type of bond can be traded OTC for qualified investors on the Moscow Stock Exchange. The bank also plans to issue more blockchain ETF products, including Bitcoin (BTC) futures. This is a move in line with the regulations of the Central Bank of Russia, allowing crypto-based instruments to be used by qualified investors.
The promotion of both AI and cryptocurrency helps Sberbank position itself as an innovation hub in progressive fields. At the same time, it reflects Russia's efforts to develop technological capabilities and dominate the international market.
In the coming months, analysts will monitor whether this strategy proves successful, especially as Sberbank's major competitor Yandex has announced that their LLM model also has reasoning capabilities.
