Pudgy Penguins launched a skill-based Web3 game called Pengu Clash for the Open Network (TON) blockchain, joining the competitive mini-game space.
According to the Pudgy Penguins team, the game will operate on a play-to-earn system, allowing players to compete and earn rewards for mastering the game instead of speculating. Luka Netz, CEO of the Pudgy Penguins team, told CoinTelegraph: "Play-to-earn, at its core, is a skill-based game."
Users bet against each other in a profit-based system, where they earn tradable tokens provided by the game. This is a user-interaction-based system. The project stated that the game will include play modes with different rules and objectives, along with skill-based challenges.
Pudgy Penguins is developing the Pengu Clash platform on the TON blockchain, citing the large and distinct Tlgrm user base as a key factor. According to Netz, the messaging platform has a "user base that is completely different from what we had available before," including users from Northern Europe and other regions.
He said: "Most platforms are not equipped for this type of play. We see it as an opportunity for expansion."
Netz sees the game as a way to grow the Penguins brand, with commercial gains as a secondary consideration. "We make money, but it's a secondary result of our intellectual property reaching the masses."
The "Pudgy Penguins" collection was launched as a non-fungible token (NFT) collection in 2021, and quickly gained wide popularity thanks to its cartoon-style avatars. The collection includes 8,888 unique non-fungible tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, with a total market value of nearly $200 million as of June 17.
The project plans to release more games in 2025. The next game, Pudgy Party, is scheduled for release in August.

The TON network has served as the exclusive blockchain for Tlgrm's Mini app system since January.
According to TonStat, the TON blockchain has over 44 million active wallets. However, the network has seen a sharp decline in the number of monthly active wallets, down 82.3% since October 2024. Despite the drop in activity, the network still processes about 19,500 transactions daily.
