Cryptocurrencies are officially legalized - the new law will come into force in 2026
The National Assembly of Vietnam approved a new legislative act on digital technologies. The Digital Technology Industry Law will come into effect on January 1, 2026, and for the first time establishes the official status of cryptocurrencies and digital assets in the country.
The document introduces a clear delineation: two separate categories are created - virtual assets and crypto assets. Fiat money, securities, and traditional financial instruments are not included in these concepts.
Regulators will be empowered to monitor activities in the field of digital assets, establish business rules, ensure compliance with the law, and audit companies.
Tightening control: combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism
Authorities intend to strengthen control over transactions with digital assets in terms of:
Counteraction to money laundering
Combatting the financing of terrorism
Ensuring cybersecurity
The measures taken are aimed at bringing Vietnam in line with international standards, which may help the country exit the FATF gray list.
The government is betting not only on crypto - AI, semiconductors, and infrastructure are priorities.
The law covers a much broader agenda. Simultaneously with regulating the crypto market, Vietnam is launching a state program to promote high technologies.
Key directions:
Development of semiconductor production
Investments in artificial intelligence
Modernization of digital infrastructure
The state will provide companies with tax benefits and land lease preferences for the construction of factories and R&D centers.
Support for personnel and scientific research is a long-term priority
To develop the industry, local authorities will finance:
Specialist training programs
Training in the field of AI and high technologies
Development of research centers in the field of semiconductors and software engineering
The goal is to strengthen the country's position in global supply chains and attract investments from leading global technology companies.
Strategic turnaround - Vietnam enters the digital elite
Officials openly state: these reforms should make Vietnam one of the leaders in global digital transformation.
As part of the new strategy, authorities plan to:
Integrate digital skills into the education system
Develop own risk management rules in the field of AI
Stimulate the inflow of international capital
The country is transitioning from a follower role to trying to become an active player in shaping new technological standards.
