Canada and the United Kingdom have formed a new partnership to strengthen economic ties between the two countries by establishing a joint trade working group ahead of the G7 summit in Alberta.
The announcement was made in a joint statement on Sunday when UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made his first official visit as head of government to Canada.
Starmer held talks with Canadian counterpart Mark Carney as part of a series of bilateral discussions to deepen existing partnerships and forge new economic cooperation. The statement said the working group would present its proposals to both prime ministers within six months.
“We will create a new structured UK-Canada Economic and Trade Working Group to further deepen our existing trade relations,” said the joint statement from the two prime ministers.
This step represents a new commitment from the two countries to reassess their trade relations in light of changing global economic patterns and supply chain disruptions.
The United Kingdom and Canada are expanding cooperation in digital trade and AI.
The new working group will address market access issues and deepen collaboration in emerging areas. It has identified digital trade, artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure development, and strategic alliances in critical minerals as priorities.
Canada and the United Kingdom see these sectors as central to their future economic resilience. By coordinating efforts, they aim to ensure that their economies become even more competitive, inclusive, and innovative in a rapidly changing global market.
This step also addresses concerns within Canada about over-reliance on U.S. markets, as Canadian industries, including steel, aluminum, and automotive, continue to face tariffs and trade barriers in the U.S. market.
The Conference Board of Canada reports that the United Kingdom accounted for only 3.6% of Canada's exports and 1.2% of its imports in 2024, making it a relatively minor trading partner. However, both governments are keen to explore untapped opportunities beyond the usual trade in raw commodities. While Canada's exports to the UK mainly consist of gold and energy, the new plan aims to expand and diversify trade between the two countries.
Leaders promote trade pacts and strengthen military cooperation.
Canada has promised to introduce legislation later in 2025 to ratify the UK's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and establish a new trade working group. The CPTPP is a broad trade agreement among 11 countries, including Japan, Australia, Mexico, and Singapore.
The United Kingdom became a member of the trading bloc last year on a temporary basis, with benefits granted to it by nine Indo-Pacific markets. However, Canada and Mexico need final ratification to fully benefit from membership.
This step reaffirms Canada's commitment to multilateralism and its Indo-Pacific strategy and provides a stronger presence for the United Kingdom in the region after Brexit.
In addition to economic ties, the joint statement highlights the expansion of defense cooperation between the two countries. Canada and the United Kingdom also confirmed their commitment to support Ukraine within the broader G7 cooperation on global security.
As geopolitical tensions rise and global supply chains are strained, governments appear to be coming together to achieve common values and strategic goals.
The news comes as G7 leaders meet in Alberta this weekend for a three-day summit on global economic resilience, technological innovation, and international security. For Carney, the conference is an opportunity to promote Canada’s role in global trade and the green economy. This is Starmer’s first outing on the world stage since he became leader, and he is focused on the desire to restore international connections.
This revived partnership between the United Kingdom and Canada is a timely reminder that in today's unstable global economy, there are never too many trusted and reliable friends.
