The emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on Thursday (June 12) demanding an immediate and unconditional permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, calling for Israel to immediately lift restrictions on humanitarian aid access to the Gaza Strip and to end the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The resolution was adopted with a vote of 149 in favor, 12 against, and 19 abstentions. Besides Israel and the United States, votes against were cast by Argentina, Fiji, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu.

The resolution calls for both parties in the Israel-Hamas conflict to comply with international legal obligations, including international humanitarian law, particularly regarding the duty to protect civilians during hostilities, emphasizing accountability for violations.
