Elon Musk called Donald Trump before posting an apology for going "too far" in his online comments. This move came after efforts by Musk and Trump’s aides to ease tensions following a public spat.

According to a source from the White House cited by Reuters, Elon Musk called President Donald Trump on Monday before posting a message on X saying he regrets some of his comments on social media.

The apology was posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, stating: "I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far." Trump later called the gesture "very nice," signaling a possible thaw in their public discord.

According to the New York Times, the apology came after Musk had a private conversation with Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles on Friday. The talks aimed to find ways to ease tensions between the two men, who had previously clashed on social media.

The feud began last Thursday when Musk criticized Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill. Trump retaliated by downplaying Musk's role in his political success. The dispute quickly escalated after Musk even attempted to link Trump to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In the following days, Musk hinted that he wanted to repair the relationship. After conversations with Wiles and Vance, he deleted several social media posts, including one alleging that Trump’s name appeared in government records related to Epstein.

Despite Musk's efforts, Trump reportedly told his advisors that he was not interested in talking to the billionaire and was "done with him." He reiterated a similar message in press interviews. However, behind closed doors, teams on both sides are working towards reconciliation.

MUSK ACTS TO PLEASE RELATIONS

Musk seems to want to keep the peace, even though both men have a lot at stake. Trump threatened to cancel SpaceX’s multi-billion dollar government contracts. Ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, Musk, who is also one of the largest donors to the Republican Party, pledged to contribute an additional $100 million to Trump’s outside political groups.

Musk's knowledge of the inner circle of the administration also gives him a lot of influence. Trump may not want to completely exclude Musk to avoid issues during his term in office, where former staff have written books about him, revealing some 'important' secrets.
