In a recent interview, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the company is considering accepting stablecoins as a payment method. But he immediately clarified that this has nothing to do with Bitcoin.
This is not the first time that Khosrowshahi has made such statements. However, each time it sounds as cautious as possible. There are no deadlines or clear plans yet.
Uber and stablecoins: could something come of it?
Uber has been showing interest in Web3 and blockchain technologies for several years now. The company even tried to launch its own digital payment solutions, but so far without much success.
But in a recent interview, Khosrowshahi hinted that the idea is not dead yet. And if they are going to bet on crypto, it should only be on stablecoins.
"We are still in the stage of exploration, but I think that stablecoins are one of the most interesting applications of crypto. They have real practical meaning, unlike models like 'buy and hold'. Especially for global companies. They can significantly reduce costs," explained the CEO.
He emphasized that Uber is only interested in stablecoins. Although he mentioned the wave of corporate Bitcoin purchases, he does not clearly support that strategy.
Despite the cautious wording, the market reacted instantly. After the interview, Uber's stock briefly jumped. But almost immediately the growth came to a halt.
However, this is not the first time that Uber has talked about crypto payments. Back in 2022, Khosrowshahi claimed that payment in cryptocurrency is a "very real prospect". But since then, the company has not taken any concrete steps.
And now it seems that history is repeating itself. Despite the interest in stablecoins and potential advantages for global operations, Uber still has not made any clear promises. No deadlines, no specific plans, just "we are studying", "we are thinking", and "we are considering".
So it is too early to talk about a real shift towards Web3. But if Uber does decide to go for it, it will be a significant step for the entire crypto industry.
