Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees, announced the launch of Claude Gov — a specialized AI for the needs of U.S. defense and intelligence. The model, integrated with the Palantir platform and AWS, is already being used at the highest levels of national security. Claude Gov is designed for analyzing classified data, assessing threats, and processing complex information, providing faster and more accurate solutions in critical situations.
According to Anthropic, the model has less strict restrictions for government use, but prohibits applications in the development of weapons or domestic surveillance. The partnership with Palantir, a well-known developer of analytical systems for defense, and AWS with Impact Level 6 certification ensures secure processing of classified data. This move reflects the growing interest in AI in the national security sector, although it raises concerns about ethical aspects.
Critics, including Timnit Gebru, point to the contradiction between Anthropic's 'ethical' reputation and its collaboration with the military. The AI market for defense is rapidly growing: U.S. contracts in this area increased to $675 million in 2022–2023. Claude Gov could change the approach to intelligence and operations but requires careful oversight.
