Digital currency (English: Digital currency) (also known as digital money, electronic money, or cryptocurrencies) is a type of currency that is only available in digital form and has no physical presence (such as cash or coins). It has similar characteristics to physical currencies but allows for instant transactions and ownership transfer without borders. Examples include virtual currencies, cryptocurrencies, or even 'digital fiat currency' issued by a central bank. Like traditional money, these currencies can be used to purchase goods and services, but they can also be limited to specific communities, such as for use within an online game or social network.

Digital currency is a financial balance recorded electronically on a stored-value card or another device. Another form of electronic money is network money, which allows for the transfer of value over computer networks, particularly the Internet. Electronic money is also a claim on a private bank or other financial institution, such as bank deposits.

Digital money can be centralized, where there is a central point of cash supply, or decentralized, where the cash supply can be controlled from various sources.
