Musk and Trump’s public spat cools, White House arranges call for reconciliation

On Thursday local time, the conflict between U.S. President Trump and the world’s richest man Musk escalated into a heated public spat, but Musk soon released signals of de-escalation, showing a trend towards reducing tensions. White House aides have arranged for the two to speak on Friday in an effort to resolve the conflict.

Earlier that day, Musk went on the offensive, calling for Trump's impeachment and suggesting that Trump has not released documents related to Epstein due to his involvement in the 'Lolita Island incident.' In response, Trump proposed cutting off government contracts with Musk’s company. Previously, Musk's former advisor had urged Republicans to oppose Trump's signature tax bill, arguing that it would increase the deficit.

Just hours ago, Musk, who had claimed he would retire SpaceX's 'Dragon' spacecraft, suddenly changed his tone. A user on the X platform with only 200 followers commented, 'This argument is too embarrassing; both sides should calm down, take a step back, and discuss it again in a few days.' Musk replied, 'Good suggestion, the Dragon will not be retired.' Additionally, billionaire Bill Ackman, who is both an ally of Trump and a friend of Musk, called for the two to reconcile for the national interest, and Musk expressed agreement.

This sharp exchange marks an astonishing rupture in their relationship. For months, they had worked together to reshape the federal government, but now they have moved into opposition, putting Republican lawmakers in a dilemma, as Musk has become a key financial supporter of Republican political activities, while Trump remains a core political force in reshaping the Republican Party.

Nevertheless, some party members connected to both are actively mediating. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated, 'Policy differences should not be personalized,' and noted that Musk is a friend. However, some of Trump’s allies have criticized Musk, with Trump’s former aide Steve Bannon even calling for an investigation into Musk's immigration status, labeling him an 'illegal foreigner' who should be deported.

When asked about the public fallout with Musk, Trump appeared calm, saying, 'Oh, it’s okay, things are going very well, never been better.' Previously, Trump had recalled details of an event he held for Musk while meeting German Chancellor Merz in the Oval Office, mentioning that Musk had refused to wear makeup at the time, joking that he is quite the character. The White House has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the cooling of tensions late at night.
