Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role in the Trump administration after publicly denouncing a newly proposed tax and spending package. Musk had been serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a post created under Trump to identify and cut federal waste. His resignation, first reported by The Guardian, came shortly after the bill passed in Congress.

In a strongly worded post on X, Musk wrote:

I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it — you know you did wrong.”

Musk had previously aligned with Trump on various budget reforms and efficiency goals, but this bill appears to have been a breaking point. According to The Guardian, he viewed the legislation as a reckless expansion of federal spending that would worsen the deficit with no structural reform.

The timing is notable. Musk’s exit comes as election season ramps up and GOP leadership pushes for more aggressive tax cuts while increasing discretionary spending. His departure signals a major shift in the fragile alliance between Trump’s fiscal agenda and Musk’s technocratic-libertarian ideals.

Whether Musk will stay politically active remains to be seen. But for now, he’s made it clear:

I’m out.
