Chinese scientists have recently revealed that a prototype jumbo jet they developed reached hypersonic speeds during a classified test flight conducted in 2021, hitting an astonishing Mach 6.56 — around 5,033 miles per hour.
The highly confidential flight, overseen by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and national authorities due to the project's sensitive nature, took place at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert, located in northwestern China.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences also shared footage of the prototype’s dramatic launch, accompanied by a statement from project lead Cui Kai, who noted that the 20-minute test successfully tackled several major engineering challenges faced in advanced aircraft development.
