Bill Gates could have become the world's first trillionaire if he had held on to his shares in Microsoft.
A new video from Forbes estimates that Gates' wealth would be around $1.2 trillion today, and $1.5 trillion combined with Melinda French Gates, if they had not sold their shares or donated to charity.
At Microsoft’s initial public offering in 1986, Gates owned 49% of the company. After decades of selling, giving, and donations, he now owns less than 1%, valued at approximately $28 billion.
Instead of pursuing personal wealth, Gates built one of the largest charitable legacies in history. Through the Gates Foundation, he has donated over $100 billion, mostly with the help of Warren Buffett.
In a recent blog post, Gates cited Andrew Carnegie's belief that "whoever dies rich, dies disgraced," and said he is determined not to let that be his legacy.
He has redirected his vast wealth to focus on impact. This has always been his plan.
