Elon Musk stepped down from leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump administration initiative to cut federal spending, on May 29, 2025, as his 130-day tenure as a special government employee ended.

Musk announced in April 2025 that he would reduce his DOGE involvement to focus on Tesla, which faced a 71% profit drop and a 20% sales decline in Q1 2025, alongside boycotts tied to his political role.

DOGE, co-led with Vivek Ramaswamy, aimed to cut $1 trillion but claimed $160 billion in savings, though experts argue the impact was minimal, affecting less than 0.1% of federal spending. The initiative eliminated 11 agencies and 216,000 jobs, targeting entities like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Critics, including policy experts, slammed DOGE for degrading services like veterans’ hospitals and IRS operations, with some cuts potentially increasing the deficit.

Musk faced protests and a $122 billion net worth drop, partly due to his DOGE role. He will continue advising Trump informally while focusing on Tesla and SpaceX. DOGE will persist under new leadership, but its momentum may wane.
