On May 25, the New York police arrested 37-year-old cryptocurrency investor John Woeltz and a 24-year-old female accomplice in downtown Manhattan. The two are suspected of kidnapping and torturing an Italian tourist. According to sources cited by the New York Post, Woeltz kept the victim imprisoned in a high-end apartment in SoHo for over two weeks, attempting to gain access to his financial accounts through violence, involving amounts totaling in the millions of dollars. Police found Polaroid photos documenting the abuse at the scene, including one showing the victim with a gun pointed at him. The victim was lured to the apartment on May 6 under the pretense of a business deal, and was subsequently kidnapped and abused, escaping while claiming Woeltz planned to kill him. Woeltz was an early investor in Bitcoin, and his GitHub account has been inactive since 2020. Woeltz is charged with second-degree assault, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and illegal possession of a firearm, while the female accomplice is charged with kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment.
