🏛 Supreme Court signals Trump can’t fire Fed Chair Powell
In a major decision this week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Trump was within his rights to fire members of two labor-focused federal boards. But in a critical twist, the Court also made clear that the Federal Reserve is a different case.
The justices explained that the Fed’s unique, partly private setup means its chair, currently Jerome Powell can’t be removed by the president without cause. This draws a sharp line between regular federal agencies and the Fed’s special role in steering the economy.
This ruling comes as Trump has previously criticized Powell but says he has no plans to remove him before his term ends in 2026. The decision helps reinforce the Fed’s independence, a key factor in keeping markets stable and monetary policy on track.
