As a result of the cyberattack in December 2024, the personal data of 69,420 Coinbase customers was compromised, according to a report to the Maine state prosecutor.
What fell into the hands of the attackers:
names and addresses;
phones and email;
fragments of social security numbers and bank details;
photos of identity documents.
How it happened:
The attackers bribed support contractors outside the United States.
Through their accounts, access was gained to the data.
Hackers demanded a ransom of $20 million, but Coinbase refused to pay and announced the same amount for information about the criminals.
Compensation for the affected:
Free access to credit activity monitoring service.
Insurance policy up to $1 million.
Darknet monitoring and recovery of lost information.
The incident affected less than 1% of active Coinbase users (NASDAQ: COIN), but highlights the vulnerability of even large platforms. Keep an eye on cybersecurity and cryptocurrency market news! Subscribe to #MiningUpdates to stay informed.
