Laszlo Hanyecz thought the idea of buying pizza with Bitcoin was 'very cool'.
It is well known that programmer Laszlo Hanyecz spent an astonishing 10,000 BTC to purchase two pizzas from Papa John's in 2010.
The proposal was posted on the Bitcointalk.org forum, which is a major hub for early adopters of cryptocurrency. It is well known as the first purchase ever made using Bitcoin.
In the past, the original cryptocurrency had almost no economic value, with 10,000 BTC worth only about $41. Today, the value of those two pizzas is as high as $1.1 billion.
19-year-old California student Jeremy Sturdivant accepted the payment, and he eventually traveled across the U.S. with his girlfriend using those coins.
Sturdivant told the New York Post that he actually had no idea how big Bitcoin would become, adding that he felt proud to have contributed to Bitcoin becoming a global phenomenon.
It is worth noting that Hanyecz also made the same deal with several others, spending a total of 100,000 BTC to buy pizza in 2010.
