Ben Allen receives the Maelstrom Bitcoin Developer Grant to develop Payjoin technology.
Maelstrom has awarded the third Bitcoin Developer Grant to Ben Allen, who will dedicate the next 12 months to improving the privacy infrastructure of Payjoin and its adoption across the ecosystem.
Arthur Hayes' family office announced in a recent press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine that Ben Allen has been selected as the third recipient of the Maelstrom Bitcoin Developers Grant. Over the next year, Allen will focus on developing the Payjoin Dev Kit project, a Bitcoin transaction tool focused on privacy, designed to enhance user anonymity and network scalability.
The Payjoin technology, first introduced in 2019 by Nicolas Dorier in BIP 78, allows both the sender and the receiver to share inputs in a single Bitcoin transaction. This changes the common assumptions held by financial surveillance companies, which is the idea that inputs of multiple transactions should come from one party. By breaking this assumption, even the limited adoption of Payjoin technology can enhance privacy across the Bitcoin network.
Arthur Hayes, CEO of Maelstrom, said: "Maelstrom would like to congratulate Ben Allen on this grant." He added: "The great thing about Payjoin is that if a minimal usage rate is achieved, it contradicts a key assumption used by financial surveillance companies. Their assumption is that if a Bitcoin transaction has multiple inputs, all inputs must belong to the same entity. Therefore, the adoption of Payjoin improves the privacy of even those who do not use it. We are excited to support Ben Allen's work on open-source tools and software to increase the adoption of Payjoin."
Allen, who will work alongside Dan Gold, aims to scale the Payjoin application to integrate it into more Bitcoin wallets. He acknowledged the technical complexities of the project—including the requirement for recipients to be online—but expressed optimism about overcoming these challenges.
Allen expressed his deep gratitude to Arthur Hayes and Maelstrom for their generosity in providing this grant to support his work on the Payjoin Dev Kit project. He added: "With this funding, I can fully dedicate myself to improving the Payjoin application, enhancing testing, and ensuring that the development kit remains robust, well-documented, and maintainable for the future."
Allen also emphasized the broader goal of his work: "Improving Bitcoin privacy is an area where continuous enhancement provides a better experience by empowering users to control their financial data and enhancing peace of mind when using Bitcoin daily. This is a great opportunity to contribute to Bitcoin's privacy and scalability, and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with the community to make Payjoin more widespread."
The company "Maelstrom", which focuses on supporting the infrastructure of digital assets, is led by Arthur Hayes, co-founder of the BitMEX platform. Through grants like these, the company invests in the fundamental tools that enhance a more private, scalable, and decentralized Bitcoin system.
