India’s PSLV-C61 Rocket Mission Fails — Earth Observation Satellite EOS-09 Lost in Space. In a rare setback for India’s prestigious space program, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) suffered a mission failure early Sunday as its PSLV-C61 rocket failed to deliver the EOS-09 Earth observation satellite into orbit.
The mission lifted off at 5:59 AM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, but encountered a critical anomaly during the third stage of flight. According to ISRO officials, a sudden drop in chamber pressure within the third-stage solid motor caused the rocket to deviate from its intended trajectory, resulting in the satellite’s loss.
The EOS-09 satellite was designed to enhance India’s Earth observation capabilities, including disaster management, national security, and environmental monitoring. The failed deployment marks a significant blow to ISRO’s otherwise stellar track record, particularly the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) series, renowned globally for its reliability.
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan confirmed the mission could not be accomplished and announced the formation of a Failure Analysis Committee to investigate the incident.
This event places a rare blemish on ISRO’s decades-long history of precision-driven missions and comes at a time when India is steadily asserting its presence in the global space economy.
