Bitcoin Pizza Day: The First Real-World Crypto Purchase

Back in 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made history by paying 10,000 BTC (worth just $41 then) for two pizzas — the first time Bitcoin was ever used to buy something real.

This iconic moment, celebrated every year on May 22nd, proved that Bitcoin could function as a currency, not just digital code.

Laszlo posted the offer on a forum, and 19-year-old Jeremy Sturdivant accepted it, paying for the pizzas with dollars and receiving the Bitcoins. Neither of them imagined Bitcoin’s future value — what’s now known as the most expensive pizza ever could be worth hundreds of millions today!

At the time, there were no proper crypto exchanges. The first one, BitcoinMarket.com, launched in 2010, helping bring liquidity to this new market.

Laszlo was also among the first to mine Bitcoin with GPUs, paving the way for modern crypto mining.

Bitcoin Pizza Day reminds us how far the crypto world has come — from a pizza trade to global financial innovation.

It's a story of belief, risk, and the power of an idea that changed the world.
