Ukraine Prepares for Major Move with Bitcoin
Ukraine is planning to take an important step with Bitcoin. The government is nearing completion of a new bill that allows the storage of Bitcoin as part of the national reserve. According to MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the bill is almost ready. If successful, Ukraine will join the short list of countries that regard Bitcoin as an important financial asset.
Ukraine's Bitcoin Bill
Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced that the draft law allowing the government to create strategic reserves with Bitcoin is being finalized. This move is part of a larger vision to integrate digital assets into national policy and improve Ukraine's financial preparedness. He suggested this idea in February 2025, and this time, the legal text is almost complete.
Legalizing Cryptocurrency
Along with the Bitcoin reserve plan, Ukraine is also working on a broader cryptocurrency regulation bill, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. According to Daniil Getmantsev, head of the tax committee of the Verkhovna Rada, a specialized group is coordinating with the National Bank of Ukraine and the IMF to shape this new law. The upcoming law will introduce clear rules on cryptocurrency taxation and anti-money laundering procedures.
Support from Binance
Kirill Khomyakov from Binance expressed support for Ukraine's plan. According to him, creating a cryptocurrency reserve will require significant updates to current legislation. He also emphasized that these efforts could ultimately bring clarity on how digital assets are treated in Ukraine.
Potential to Change Economic Structure
Globally, only 4% of the population owns Bitcoin, and Ukrainians are among the pioneers. Although Ukraine lacks a complete legal framework, recent developments could soon change that. If passed, these laws will not only bring cryptocurrency into Ukraine's mainstream economy but also reshape the country's financial future.
