The British Museum has collaborated with Asprey Studio to recreate the masterpiece 'Rhinoceros' from 1515 by the German Renaissance artist, Albrecht Dürer, into 11 pieces of pure silver sculpture. Each piece will come with an on-chain Bitcoin digital certificate. This technology ensures the provenance of the artwork. According to Ali Walker, the creative director of Asprey Studio, buyers will receive the digital certificate first, and the silver piece will take several months to craft.
The process of producing this 40 cm tall piece is very complex, requiring the digital model to be segmented and re-welded into shape. Only a few craftsmen in England are capable of completing it. Although Dürer had never seen a real rhinoceros when creating the print 'Rhinoceros', he only relied on descriptions from texts. Walker believes that if Dürer were alive today, he would easily adapt to modern digital ownership verification methods.
The British Museum previously released NFTs of artists such as Hokusai Katsushika through LaCollection and collaborated with The Sandbox to develop a metaverse experience. In this collaboration, the digital engraving is not aimed at NFT-ing the original work but to create a Blockchain certificate for the silver sculpture. The original sketch of 'Rhinoceros' is still preserved at the British Museum.
