Summer Mersinger, one of four commissioners of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), will become the next CEO of the Blockchain Association. On May 14, the Association announced that current CEO Kristin Smith would be transferring the position to Mersinger on May 16. Mersinger is expected to officially take office on June 2. Although her term at the CFTC is expected to last until April 2028, the Association confirms that Mersinger will leave the agency on May 30.
Mersinger's departure from the CFTC, where she has served since 2022, paves the way for President Donald Trump to nominate a new member to the agency. Current regulations require that no more than three commissioners belong to the same political party. As important as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the CFTC is one of the key financial regulatory agencies in the U.S. that influences cryptocurrency. Legislators in Congress are working to pass a market structure bill to clarify the role each agency may play in overseeing and regulating cryptocurrency.
