Trump's tariffs refer to the trade policies implemented by the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, during his tenure (2017–2021), which significantly changed the direction of U.S. trade policy. These policies focused on increasing import tariffs, particularly on products from China, with the aim of reducing the trade deficit and protecting domestic industries. One of the most notable steps was the imposition of billions of dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods in the context of a trade war that heated up since 2018. Trump also raised tariffs on steel and aluminum from several countries. This policy is claimed to support U.S. workers; however, many economists criticized it for causing global tensions, hurting farmers, raising consumer goods prices, and provoking retaliation from trading partners. Although seen as an effort to defend the domestic economy, Trump's tariffs sparked widespread debate about the long-term effectiveness of protectionism in an interconnected global economy.
