Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the largest electricity provider in Malaysia, reported that electricity theft related to illegal cryptocurrency mining increased by 300% from 2018 to 2024. Management added that illegal cryptocurrency mining has risen due to global cryptocurrency transactions, local media reported.

TNB developed statistics as part of a joint operation involving the Energy Commission, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the police, and local councils.

According to data from the electricity management, in 2018, 610 cases of electricity theft related to illegal mining were detected. This number rose to 2397 in 2024, it was added.

"Joint operations and nationwide raids effectively shut down illegal mining installations," TNB said in a statement. "These enforcement actions secured the stability of the power grid."

Statistics revealed that the average number of electricity thefts related to cryptocurrencies was 2303 per year from 2020 to 2024.
