CHINA SUSPICIONED TO “REBORN” A SOVIET SECRET AGENCY IN CUBA

A new report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington has raised concerns in the US, saying that a suspected Chinese electronic surveillance station (CDAA) is being built in Bejucal — not far from the Cuban capital Havana. More specifically, this is the site of a Soviet spy facility during the Cold War.

According to CSIS, satellite images taken in March last year show that Bejucal has been significantly upgraded over the past decade, a controversial development amid China’s increasingly expanding intelligence activities in the Western Hemisphere.

The CSIS report also revealed a suspect complex in Bejucal that has not only expanded in size but is also equipped with multiple antenna arrays and a new radome — which could conceal a high-powered electronic surveillance system. Such a CDAA system could potentially pick up signals from up to 7,900 miles away, enough to reach a number of strategic US military bases as well as Washington, DC.

While CSIS acknowledged that there was “no clear evidence” directly linking the facility to the Chinese government, it also noted that US officials have publicly stated that Beijing has been granted access to intelligence facilities in Cuba.

The development immediately raised serious alarms from a group of Republicans in the House of Representatives. In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, US officials warned that if not controlled in time, China could turn Cuba into a forward base for electronic warfare, to collect intelligence and directly undermine US national security interests. #china #CryptoComeback
