The major wars occurred in 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999. The first two wars were mainly over the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir. The 1971 war, however, led to the creation of Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, and marked a decisive victory for India. In 1999, both countries engaged in the Kargil conflict in the high-altitude Himalayas. These wars have deeply affected regional peace, with long-standing political and military tensions continuing between the two nuclear-armed nations
