Fundraising Appeal from Michelle Bond
Michelle Bond, wife of former FTX Digital Markets co-CEO Ryan Salame, has requested the dismissal of several charges. She claims that U.S. prosecutors deceived her husband in a plea deal. In a filing on May 7 in the Southern District of New York, Bond's attorney reiterated the accusations Salame raised about opposing his plea agreement with the government, which ultimately still led to prison time.
Bond claims that prosecutors reached a deal with Salame through 'deception,' accusing them of agreeing not to prosecute her. Bond's lawyer argues that this condition was not formalized; however, the government still used it to persuade Salame to plead guilty. They request the court to reassess the case and hold a hearing to explore this issue.
Michelle Bond was charged in August 2024 with offenses related to illegal contributions to a campaign, connected to her run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022. Ryan Salame, after pleading guilty to two felony counts in 2023, attempted to nullify the agreement with prosecutors, partly involving a promise not to prosecute Bond.
The Legal Journey of FTX
Since FTX collapsed in 2022, nearly all former executives of the company have been charged with offenses related to the misuse of funds from the cryptocurrency exchange. Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of FTX, denied the charges but was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2023. An appeal has been filed and is still awaiting a decision.
Caroline Ellison, former CEO of Alameda Research, received a two-year prison sentence in another plea agreement, while Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, former leaders of FTX, also pleaded guilty and were sentenced in 2024.
