On May 8, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old resident of Virginia, was sentenced to 30 years and 4 months in prison. Chhipa was convicted of funding the terrorist organization ISIS. From October 2019 to October 2022, the defendant raised funds through social media and traveled hundreds of miles to collect cash.
He converted over $185,000 into cryptocurrency, transferring money to Turkey before the funds were sent to ISIS members in Syria. The financial resources were used to support ISIS fighters and rescue kidnapped female members.
