📍 Bitcoin Maxis debate the proposal to remove the 80 Byte limit on OP_RETURN
📌 In a recent proposal, Bitcoin Core is considering removing the 80-byte data limit in OP_RETURN – a part of Bitcoin transactions that allows arbitrary information to be recorded on the blockchain.
📌 Potential impacts if the limit is removed:
➕ Technically, removing the limit would simplify the protocol rules, helping to curb "node deception" fraud.
➖ But on the other hand, it would pave the way for the widespread storage of non-financial data, from NFTs, games, to independent layer 2 platforms… causing Bitcoin's blockchain to bloat and stray from its original goal: to become a minimal, stable, long-lasting decentralized currency system.
📌 Who decides this?
This is not an exclusive decision of the development team. Every proposal must go through a "rough consensus" process including the steps:
- Release a Bitcoin Core update containing the change.
- Miners, node operators, and businesses must actively update the software.
- If the majority of the network does not agree, the update will be invalidated or a chain split may occur.
📌 Note that running a node through Bitcoin Core does not mean you are a miner; you have no financial benefits, so these nodes are all giant whales, builders - people who use their own node for transactions to resist censorship and protect their assets.
The whales holding BTC do so for its minimalism, and they will definitely not support this, so I think this proposal will soon be dismissed. $BTC
