Bhutan and Binance Pay launch the first national cryptocurrency tourism payment system
Cryptocurrency-powered tourism: a world first
In a historic move announced on May 7, 2025, Bhutan unveiled a national tourism payment infrastructure that allows international visitors to pay for everything – from visa fees and flights to accommodations, tour guides, and local markets – using cryptocurrencies supported by Binance Pay.
"One wallet, one journey" is more than a slogan: it reflects Bhutan's ambition to make digital innovation and accessibility to cryptocurrency a central part of its national tourism strategy.
More than 100 merchants now accept cryptocurrency
With over 100 merchants integrated across the country, including those in remote areas, the system empowers small businesses and simplifies payment logistics for international tourists.
Accepted payments include BNB, BTC, ETH, and stablecoins, allowing seamless transactions via mobile wallets for services and goods across Bhutan's tourism infrastructure.
Financial inclusion and digital innovation
This initiative not only positions Bhutan as a pioneer in cryptocurrency adoption at a national level, but also enhances financial inclusion by providing small vendors access to digital payment tools and global capital flows without relying on traditional banking.
The CEO of DK Bank noted that the project is part of Bhutan's broader vision for a self-sustaining, tech-driven economy that embraces blockchain and digital assets as vehicles for growth.
Strategic partnership with Binance Pay
Binance Pay, a contactless crypto payment technology from the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, provides the infrastructure for this new ecosystem. The platform supports instant, borderless, and fee-free crypto payments, making it ideal for international travelers.
