BlackRock eyeing a bigger chair in BTC spot ETF category

In the initial phase of the Bitcoin spot ETF launch, GrayScale was one of the top leaders, but with the passing time, BlackRock, the known asset manager, debuted in the market, and as of writing, it holds the highest number of Bitcoin.

BlackRock now has more assets than rival Grayscale’s GBTC ($16.79 billion) and has overtaken its own gold ETF (IAU) in AUM ($33.2 billion vs. $32 billion as of November 2024).

Data available on CoinGlass notes that IBIT, the Bitcoin spot ETF by BlackRock, holds 614.64k BTC’s followed by FBTC holdings 201.31k Bitcoin, and GBTC has 190.43k BTC.

IBIT also saw an inflow of $1,026 million on May 01 and May 02 of this year at the same time GBTC seems to be under pressure with constantly reflecting a growing outflow.

BlackRock started recommending a 1-2% IBIT allocation in specific model portfolios for clients choosing alternative investments in March 2025.

The goal of this action is to increase demand and offset recent outflows from BTC ETFs; nevertheless, the expected immediate impact is only $3 billion, which is small in comparison to the $1.6 trillion market valuation of Bitcoin.

However, IBIT has a market cap of $59.02 billion, FBTC has a cap of $19.39 billion, GBTC has a cap of $18.74 billion, ARKB has $5.00 billion, and BITB has $3.75 billion.

On the other hand, in terms of volume, IBIT stands at the top with a volume of $2.40 billion, FBTC has $207.05 million, and BITO has a volume of $90.12 million.
