The first round of the repeat presidential elections in Romania has concluded - 100% of ballots have been counted

The ultra-right George Simion and the mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, have advanced to the second round. Simion, the leader of the ultra-right party 'Alliance for the Union of Romanians', received 40.96% of the votes, while Dan garnered 20.99% of the votes.

The second round will take place on May 18, 2025.

Simion, known for his Eurosceptic views and criticism of military aid to Ukraine, promises to 'return Romania to Romanians' and even offered a position to the controversial Kelin Georgescu, who was disqualified from the elections.

Nicusor Dan, on the other hand, advocates for European integration, combating corruption, and supporting Ukraine. His reputation as an effective mayor of Bucharest attracts a pro-European electorate.

The previous elections in November 2024 were annulled by the Constitutional Court due to manipulations on TikTok that unexpectedly helped Georgescu rise to the lead.
