Co-founder of the Ethereum ecosystem Vitalik Buterin announced a strategic course aimed at simplifying the network's infrastructure. His goal is to enhance the scalability, sustainability, and overall efficiency of the blockchain, which should strengthen its status as a global financial and informational registry.
One of the key changes will be the implementation of a new virtual machine, likely based on RISC-V.
The replacement of the existing Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with a new, simpler, and more efficient one is expected to bring up to a 100-fold increase in performance for executing smart contracts. At the same time, backward compatibility with current contracts will be maintained through special translators, similar to how Apple uses Rosetta.
Alongside this, a change in the consensus model is proposed — the new '3-slot finality' mechanism will allow for the abandonment of the complex structure of epochs and slots. This will significantly reduce the amount of code critical for consensus and make verification more secure and transparent.
The Ethereum team is also proposing to merge serialization protocols, Merkle trees, and data erasure codes into unified systems to reduce duplication and increase efficiency.
