The EU will completely ban anonymous tokens like ZEC, XMR... from 2027
The European Union (EU) is taking another step in its efforts to regulate the digital asset sector by preparing to implement a comprehensive anti-money laundering regulation (AMLR), focusing on a total ban on privacy-preserving tokens — also known as "privacy coins" — including prominent currencies like Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC). In addition, anonymous crypto accounts will also be absolutely banned starting in 2027.
In the initial phase, AMLA will select 40 organizations – ensuring that each country has at least one supervised organization – and this process is expected to begin on July 1, 2027. The selection will be based on several strict criteria such as having a minimum of 20,000 customers in the local country or having a total trading volume exceeding 50 million Euros (equivalent to about 56 million USD).
"Privacy coins" are a type of cryptocurrency designed to obscure information related to the sender, recipient, and transaction value to maximize privacy. However, due to their high anonymity, these types of tokens have repeatedly become targets of tightening by regulatory authorities worldwide.
