Co-founder of the ecosystem $ETH Vitalik Buterin announced a strategic course towards simplifying the network's infrastructure. His goal is to enhance the scalability, resilience, and overall efficiency of the blockchain, which aims to strengthen its status as a global financial and information registry.

One of the key changes will be the implementation of a new virtual machine, likely based on RISC-V.

Replacing the existing Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with a new, simpler, and more efficient one is expected to bring up to a 100-fold increase in performance for executing smart contracts. At the same time, backward compatibility with current contracts will be maintained through special translators, similar to how Apple uses Rosetta.

In parallel, it is proposed to change the consensus model — the new "3-slot finality" mechanism will allow for the abandonment of the complex structure of epochs and slots. This will significantly reduce the amount of code critical for consensus and make verification safer and more transparent.
